Chris Anderson, author of The Long Tail, has some interesting thoughts on what the recession means for “free” business models. He’s confining his analysis just to online businesses but I’m sure these principles can be applied to bricks and mortar businesses as well. Here’s what he has to say:

Ad-supported: In the offline world, advertising is going to go down. Online, where it’s easier to make the case for clear ROIs, I suspect advertising growth will continue to be positive, but will slow considerably. That means that many of the companies that were counting on a rising tide lifting their boats will be disappointed, and more than usual will go bust. Result: Negative

Freemium: This should become the favored model, since it’s connected to direct revenues. But companies that have only worked out the free part but not the premium part are going to have to figure out what they can add to their products to make them compelling enough to pay for. If they don’t, they will find their investors’ patience with them is very limited, and many will fold. Those that get the freemium balance right should be fine: free is a good price to have when people don’t want to spend, and freemium models can work well when just 5% of users convert to premium, thanks to the near-zero marginal costs of serving the other 95%. Result: Modest positive

Gift economy: This is driven primarily by people’s “spare cycles” (AKA cognitive surplus) and rising unemployment means more spare cycles, sadly. Obviously people still need to pay the rent, so many of these shared contributions are really just advertisements for the contributor’s skills. But other contributions will be idle hands finding work while they look for their next job. As a result I think you’ll see a boom in creativity and sharing online as people take matters into their own hands. Today, if you’re in-between jobs you can still be productive, and the reputational currency you earn may pay dividends in the form of a better job when the economy recovers. Result: Positive

Below are a couple of diagrams of how these free business models work. They’re taken from Chris’s Long Tail blog, which, along with his book by the same title, I recommend highly.

efficiency, not just to make it easy to do a startup, but to survive a
downturn.

What is your company doing to prepare for what could be a prolonged contraction of the economy? Would love to hear your thoughts…

Can waiting tables teach you to be an entrepreneur? This article makes some great points about the fundamental keys of business success being learned from what most would call “less than glamorous” work. An inspiring piece for all the waiter/dreamers out there…

As an entrepreneur who has waited his fair share of tables, I found the article to be dead on in many respects, and I was inspired to try to list all the full and part time jobs that I’ve ever had. The results aren’t exactly what you’d find on a Harvard Business School resume, but it’s more clear to me now that each one of these jobs taught me something important along the way to becoming a “full time” entrepreneur.

Listed in a generally chronological order with the most recent first:

Sewickley Academy Ice Hockey – assistant then head coach (currently still a head coach)

Carnegie Learning – inside sales rep

Who would have thought a weaker US economy would lead to more online advertising? Borrell Associates explains why local businesses are turning to the Internet in the face of economic uncertainty.

According to the article, local advertisers are shifting dollars to the Internet only rather than paying for bundled media packages through traditional print and broadcast outlets.

What happens in a recession is advertisers are forced to make more economical decisions about how to spend marketing dollars,” said Gordon Borrell, CEO of the local media research firm. “And the Internet, as they’ve tested it over the last several years, is cheaper and seems to work.

Of course, the total number of deals are significantly higher in California and New England, but Pittsburgh had the higher rate of growth over the observed 10 year period.

Pittsburgh bested all other cities with a 513 percent increase in new venture funding with nearly $200 million going to new companies, up from $32 million a decade ago. New Mexico, by comparison, had a total investment of venture capital in 2007 of $128 million, which was 375 percent higher than the investment there 10 years ago of $27 million.

Speaking of startups in the Pittsburgh area, I remember reading this great article in the Post Gazette a few years ago about Sewickley being sort of a Palo Alto East. Considering this is in fact where I “live and play,” I thought it interesting to read another’s opinion of my hometown.

The article still seems fairly accurate, though I’d add a few places like Brueggers Bagels and Crazy Mocha to the map of techie hot spots. And I got a kick out of the Sewickley Confectionary being listed — our small startup office sits directly above the popular ice cream store.
